Hardwood Floors – The Healthy Choice

“Many people prefer to look of natural wood floors to carpeting. But some allergy sufferers appreciate feeling great as much as they appreciate great décor. Hardwood doesn’t trap such allergenic substances as animal dander, pollen, mold and house dust the way carpet can and hardwood floors with non-polluting finishes may promote indoor air quality.” (Your Family, April 1991 issue by Barbara Landy)

Daily Preventative Maintenance

Sweep or dust your floors on a regular basis. Wipe up spills immediately with a damp cloth. Place throw rugs at entrance and exits. Keep shoes in good repair and pets nails clipped. Use fabric faded glides or felt pads under your furniture legs and replace them as needed. Try to maintain a constant humidity level in your home of at least 40 to 50%. You can accomplish this by using air conditioning or a dehumidifier in the summer and a humidifier in the winter. Maintaining a constant humidity will minimize expansion and shrinkage on your hardwood floor. Check our Mircofiber Mop System available on our website or by calling 609-971-7188.

Monthly Maintenance

We all like to do a thorough cleaning regularly. You can accomplish this by using a mop dampened with wood floor cleaner. Emphasizing the “Wood Floor Cleaner”, Do Not use all purpose cleaners or other household cleaning products. These products can be harmful to your floors finish and to the wood. They may also cause them to become dull, sticky or slippery. If in doubt of the product right for your floor, ask your retailer or refer to manufacturers instructions.

Maintenance Coating or Buff and Coat

The most important factor in the life of your wood floor is the degree of traffic it endures and the preventative maintenance performed. A good rule of thumb I recommend is to have a maintenance coating on your floor every 3 to 5 years. This will extend the life of your floor by keeping the floor sealed from any surface contaminants… i.e. water, abrasives. You see, once your finish has deteriorated to the point where the bare wood is visible, it is necessary to resand.
